The COMPOST series Compost. Food scraps. Hot garbage. #thiswillbedirt
The process of composting is important to my inner life personally and also for the world and the environment. Being a part of the solution to the landfill issues we face gives me satisfaction and I enjoy the community aspect of this work. I’m inspired by Kompost Kids and Compost Crusader, local compost organizations.
Since I was young, I considered the waste piling up on the Earth and wondered what I could do about it. The awareness of this fact has prompted me to look at my own consumption and its process of regeneration and renewal. I built a compost bin and started noticing the beauty in the food scraps as they piled up in my compost container. I was struck with wonder at the power of transformation. This new habit became an obsession.
After a period of creating still life and floral paintings, I began painting compost which felt like a natural progression in my investigation into the lifespan of plants. I took photos into the container and found that they became obscured and abstract. I started working larger as I zoomed in to get a worm’s eye view.
The process of decomposition offers life lessons by the simple act of observing and taking part in it. These compositions are windows to other worlds, other places, adventurous landscapes. The journey through this terrain leads us to unknown realms. Catching these moments in time opens a door to the process of transformation: a secret portal to this micro-world that illustrates daily the practice of surrender.
These paintings are a reflection of the vitality and power of this morphing matter and also a reminder that we can all transform ourselves. May this work invoke a sense of urgency about the changing climate and the importance of our role in the process and healing of the planet. Compost waste is beautiful because it represents POSITIVE CHANGE.
